Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid apologized Saturday for calling Barack Obama a "light-skinned" African-American who lacked a "Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

“I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words. I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African Americans for my improper comments," Reid said in a statement.

President Obama issued a statement Saturday saying that "Harry Reid called me today and apologized for an unfortunate comment reported today. I accepted Harry's apology without question because I've known him for years, I've seen the passionate leadership he's shown on issues of social justice and I know what's in his heart. As far as I am concerned, the book is closed."(Emphasis added)

WASHINGTON --

The top Democrat in the U.S. Senate apologized on Saturday for comments he made about Barack Obama's race during the 2008 presidential bid and are quoted in a yet-to-be-released book about the campaign.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada described in private then-Sen. Barack Obama as "light skinned" and "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." Obama is the nation's first African-American president.

"I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words. I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African-Americans for my improper comments," Reid said in a statement released after the excerpts were first reported on the Web site of The Atlantic.

"I was a proud and enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama during the campaign and have worked as hard as I can to advance President Obama's legislative agenda."

Reid remained neutral during the bitter Democratic primary that became a marathon contest between Obama and then-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, whom Obama tapped as the United States' top diplomat after the election.

Reid's comments are included in the book, obtained Saturday by The Associated Press and set to be published on Monday. "Game Change" was written by Time Magazine's Mark Halperin and New York magazine's John Heilemann.

The book also says Reid urged Obama to run, perceiving the first-term senator's impatience.

Harry Reid another racist azz Democrat.  Obama doesn't care he picked one for his VP.  To Harry a lot of us Negros do not speak with a "Negro dialect"  Obama doesn't have a "Negro" dialiact because he was raised by rich white people.  This is the kind of people we have leading this country.  To Harry Reid we haven't been Negros since Barack Obama was a child.  We are black or we are African Americans we are not Negros.

Reminds me of Biden's "articulate" comment.

I told people all during 2008 that the only people making racist statements were Democrats and Obama supporters.  How nutty is that?

It appears that it's ok to be racist and sexist within the democratic party, and the people are all about tired of this ****!

There is also some classism at work here. These elite Dems are the same ones who make fun of Sarah Palin's accent; it's part of the reason why they consider her of lesser intelligence than themselves.
